Ponnuruku (Gold Melting)

Image
Since i have so many wedding coming up in the family, I've decided to post about some pre-wedding rituals in a Sri Lankan (ceylonese) wedding. It is also called as ponnuruku and the gold that is used to take the thali is melted at the bridegroom's house. Apparently this is an essential ceremony and it cannot be skipped. This ceremony normally occurs 5-7 days before the wedding. The groom presents the gold to the family's goldsmith to be melted in a clay pot. The bride do not participate  in this and the groom and bride from this time onwards do not see each other and they remain vegetarians until the wedding is over. After the gold melting, Kanni Kaal is planted in both houses.  A few guest from the groom's house attends the ceremony followed by a vegetarian meal. After the planting is over, ladies of both parties will make Athirasam and this is distributed to all present. The significance of this is something sweet is traditionally given to mark the good occasion a

Blood Donation

I know this is so a random post. I came up with this topic because SEGI recently had a blood donation campaign and i took part in it hence the post :-D When i first donated i was shit scared. Did not know how the pain will be but after going through the whole procedure I felt so happy. I did not feel any pain at all. First you have to fill up a form given to you.The next procedure is Blood Testing. The officer in charge will test your your blood to see which group it falls under. Mine is 0 +ve. Next, the doctor in-charge will check your pressure and pulse. She will question you about you meals, your night sleep and so on. When she says, OK, you can donate....there you go! The blood is drawn from an arm vein. A huge needle will be poked into you vein and that's when your blood flows into the blood bag. This process only takes about 15-20 minutes. You can donate every 3 months once. So many lives can be saved by donating blood and it won't take much of your time. Be a life sa
